Milton House Bed and Breakfast is set amongst mature trees, with colourful gardens and sits grandly on the hillside above the sea front. It is an elegant example of Victorian architecture with a solid plastered exterior and Welsh slate roof.
Milton House was built in 1883 by Robert Campbell. Born in 1814 in Scotland, Campbell lived for much of his childhood in Milton on the banks of the River Clyde. He arrived in NZ in 1849 and transported NZs first bales of wool for export from Dunedin to Port Chalmers in 1850. From 1856 he farmed in South Otago returning to Dunedin to build Milton House for his retirement. It was then left to the Presbyterian Church as a home for widows and spinsters to ‘take sea air’ and convalesce.

Since 2004 Ali and Richard Sipthorp have been proud owners of Milton House and have lovingly and sympathetically restored and enlarged the kitchen area and brought it into the convenient 21st century style whilst maintaining its Victorian grandeur and character. Richard farmed Channel Island dairy cows in the Cotswolds for most of his life. Ali was born locally (Milton NZ) and met Richard in 1988 whilst on a Young Farmer Exchange visit. She has spent most of her working life hairdressing, teaching hairdressing and Head of Boarding at St Marys School in Calne Wiltshire whilst living in England.
The gardens at Milton House are young but full of roses and scented plants and there are many outdoor areas that are perfect for relaxing, there are plenty of mature trees and calm corners to retreat into with a wine and a book!
